70% failure rate for online learning?

By Paul Mannet

Distance learning opponents have long cited low completion rates. But the statistic may be extremely outdated

A very negative statistic about online learners has floated around in academia for many years, and is still quoted by opponents of distance learning. Most recently, a study on personality traits of successful online learners by Professor Shawna Strickland again reiterated that “It is estimated that 70% of distance learners do not complete their courses.”

A raft of other studies has quoted this 70% failure estimate, but is it accurate? A close look seems to show that it may be an outdated, meaningless number.

Apparently, it first turned up in 1997 in a dissertation by S. Parks, a graduate student at Pennsylvania State University. While it may have been accurate then, a great deal has changed.

  • High speed internet has increased – as a result online access is drastically faster than it was 11 years ago and online classes are simply much easier to take from a home computer.
  • WiFi hotspots have come into being, making it possible to do some extra work on a stopover at Starbucks and lots of other places.
  • Online teaching technologies have drastically improved for live online lectures, communication between professors and students, message boards and other tools that improve the online learning experience.

Additionally, learning software that schools use to deliver distance learning has become drastically more sophisticated.

Affiliate Disclosure

By Paul Mannet

This website uses affiliate programs for monetization, which means when you click on links to schools that I display in my pages, fill in your information and request information from them, this can result in a commission being credited to this site. Some affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, College and University Net, College Bound Network and Education Dynamics (ELearners). To a lesser degree, I occasionally post links from Commission Junction, SiteSell or Amazon.com.

While I display information on a wide variety of schools, I make a point of not recommending one over the other unless I have had some direct experience with a school. I am regularly doing research on schools and pay attention to what’s being said about them in the press. I’ve certainly taken note of the fact that for-profit schools have been criticized by the government in recent months, and have made an effort to avoid promoting schools that have been charged with any deceptive practices.

Third-Party & Sponsor Ads
Text and image ads that appear in a few places on this site are third party (Google AdSense) and sponsor ads. I don’t personally endorse the products or services advertised in these ads, and these companies are not affiliated with successdegrees.com in any way. If you have questions about any affiliations on this website, or if you have had either a good or bad experience with a school here you feel I should know about, please do not hesitate to contact me. I appreciate your attention and your interest.

Where do you find the education needed to be an entrepreneur?

By Paul Mannet

It’s certainly possible, after all, to become a successful entrepreneur with no advanced education whatever. Just look at Michael Dell, who dropped out of school when he was just 19 and used just $1,000 to started a company to sell personal computers. Dell Inc is now the top PC maker in the world. Or Bill Gates, who dropped out of school and then proceeded to start the world’s largest software company and become the world’s richest man.

The truth, however, is that for every entrepreneur who succeeds purely on personal ambition, there are dozens of entrepreneurs who feel they don’t have the right business knowledge to take their dream and grow it into a profitable enterprise.

Many of the most famous entrepreneurs say in interviews that pure attitude – particularly a quality of persistence – is the key to creating your own successful business. Getting an MBA is obviously helpful. Keep in mind, however, that Donald Trump once said his time spent at Wharton Business School was spent “50% studying and 50% partying.” A number of colleges today offer degrees that are not only focused on business, but on specifically offering the education needed to be an entrepreneur. Babson College in Wellesley Mass., for instance, has an undergraduate program where students learn how to plan a profitable business, launch and manage it and even liquidate it ultimately.

Self-Taught Success
That kind of high-end training tends to be for the kind of business person who’s going to draw up a big idea and then seek a significant amount of funding from venture capitalists to get it up and running. The far greater number of entrepreneurs starts much smaller businesses, from home-based internet startups to dry cleaning stores or restaurants. A number of online schools have sprung up in recent years to offer training in how you can be a financial planner, a web designer or other home-based worker.

Basic bookkeeping is one of the most critical skills you can learn in these courses, regardless of what kind of business you create. After all, no matter how much money you bring in, you won’t be very successful unless you’re able to hold onto it as profit. A great source where you can conduct research and even take free courses in how to draw up a business plan is the U.S. Small Business Administration.
