Accreditation Resources: How To Check Up On A School

By Paul Mannet

In a nutshell, accreditation is a process of making sure that a school admits students, spends money and pursues educational goals and brings in faculty that meet basic quality standards. Although the U.S. Department of Education has repeatedly indicated this year (2007) that it would like to institution some kind of national accreditation process, the government is not in charge of college and university accreditation right now.

Keys to watch for:
Make sure your prospective school is accredited by a recognized body. Watch out for school websites that hedge by saying the institution is “approved,” “chartered” or “registered.” For basic “trade” training, it’s often fine to go to a school that is simply licensed by the state. But for an undergraduate degree, make sure the school is accredited (see our list of major accrediting agencies).

The U.S. Department of Education has a great search tool to help you check on the accreditation of all sorts of schools available here.

CHEA, The Council for Higher Education Accreditation, also has a comprehensive database of accredited schools.

Online Colleges & Universities With Open Enrollment

By Paul Mannet

What Colleges Have A 100% Acceptance Rate?

If you’re thinking of returning to school after a break – perhaps a stretch of time in the work force after high school or after taking a few college courses – you may feel some apprehension about being able to get into a good school.

Admissions are indeed very competitive at the most prestigious colleges and universities. But if you are looking for career-oriented learning, there’s a wide variety of online schools you can choose from that have “open admissions policies,” meaning that they accept all students who can fill certain basic qualifications.

What Is An Open Admissions Policy For Colleges?

“Open admission” or “open enrollment” have been around for several decades. They were started as a way to give more students – especially those from lower income backgrounds – a better chance to get a higher education. An argument that’s long been made is that competitive admissions may favor students who happen to live in towns that have the best high schools, and therefore get the kind of training that helps them do better on SAT tests. Open admissions can helps equalize opportunity a bit more. Two year community colleges were the strongest proponents of open or “inclusive” admissions in the 1960’s and 70’s. But particularly in the online education field, there are now more four-year schools and graduate programs offering it.

It’s important to understand that “open admission” does not mean a school is allowing anyone who can pay the tuition to attend. To enter a bachelor’s degree program, for example, you can expect to be required to prove that you are fluent in English and that you have completed a high school degree. If you’re not a native English speaker, you may be asked to take the Test of English Language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or similar test.

GPA Yes, But SAT Often Not Required

If you have taken some college credits already and want to transfer them into your new school, it’s likely that you will only be able to transfer them if you earned a minimum grade in each. (Spend some time looking at your prospective new school’s website though – the minimums vary a good deal not only from one school to another, but even from one program to another within a single school.) It’s not unusual for a school to have a minimum GPA for high school grads wanting admission.

If you are applying for a master’s or doctoral degree program at an open admissions school, you may be asked to submit licensure documents (as in nursing) an essay or goals statement, or to take part in an interview with faculty members. For associate’s and bachelor’s programs, however, you will almost never be asked to submit SAT, ACT, GMAT or GRE test scores.

Some have argued that open admissions have pulled down the standards at some campus-based schools. But given that it takes few additional resources to teach larger classes over the internet, it’s not clear how open admissions would negatively impact an online degree program.

Here are some of the online schools that currently have open admissions policies.

You’ll note that it includes a relatively large percentage of for-profit schools. They have tended to be the most aggressive in providing options to adult students seeking career training:

Inspirational Quotes & Quotations About Catholic Education

By Paul Mannet

Do you have a quotation about Catholic education that you feel is illuminating? We’d love to post it here. Please send us a note about it!

“All knowledge is sterile which does not lead to action and end in charity.”
– Cardinal Desire Joseph Mercier

“Learn the lesson that, if you are to do the work of a prophet, what you need is not a scepter but a hoe.”
– Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

“The Catholic school’s proper function is to create for the school community a special atmosphere animated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and charity, to help youth grow according to the new creatures they were made through baptism as they develop their own personalities, and finally to order the whole of human culture to the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students gradually acquire of the world, life and man is illumined by faith.”
– His Holiness Pope Paul VI, October 28, 1965

“It has been said that some of the great geniuses of the past never read half as much as the mediocre geniuses today, but what they read they understood and incorporated into a deeper dimension of knowledge.”
– Cardinal Desire Joseph Mercier

“The entire effort of the Catholic teacher is oriented toward an integral formation of each student.”
– William Cardinal Baum

“Study fatigues and wearies the mind and heart. Go from time to time to refresh them at the feet of Jesus Christ under the cross; some moments of repose in His sacred wounds give fresh vigor and new lights. “
– Saint Vincent Ferrer

“Ultimately, the idea of a Catholic University is about the mission to form students to become holy, saintly, well-educated, productive members of the Church and society.”
– Rev. Leonard A. Kennedy, “How to Keep Your University Catholic”

“From time to time friends outside the [Roman Catholic] Church consult me. They are attracted by certain features, repelled or puzzled by others. To them I can only say, from my own experience: ‘Come inside. You cannot know what the Church is like from outside. However learned you are in theology, nothing you know amounts to anything in comparison with the knowledge of the simplest actual member of the Communion of Saints.’ “
– Evelyn Waugh, English novelist after his conversion to Catholicism from Anglicanism

“In fact it must never be forgotten that the subject of Christian education is man whole and entire, soul united to body in unity of nature, with all his faculties natural and supernatural, such as right reason and revelation show him to be…”
– His Holiness Pope Pius XI, “Divini lllius Magistri,” 1929
