- Criminology Degrees -
"Criminology" is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "the scientific study of crime as a social phenomenon, of criminals, and of penal treatment." Criminologists often work within police agencies or independently to profile criminals, in order to help law enforcement officials be more effective in dealing with prisoners, juvenile offenders or offenders in other areas of the criminal justice systems. A criminologist may, in some cases, be asked to testify in a court case as to the nature of a defendant and his or her motives, or may work on policy projects with any number of local or national criminal justice groups. Community groups may also hire criminologists to help devise strategies to prevent crimes in the community before they occur, or the help victims.
Some professionls combine the more theoretical discipline of criminology with technical knowledge of forensics or psychology in order to work more directly with the police in solving specific crimes or devising the best methods of rehabilitating convicts. Some of the degrees that train students for this type of work either have combined titles like "BA Criminology, Forensics" or go under broader headings like "Criminalistics" or "The Criminal Mind," in the case of more psychology-oriented degrees. Overall, criminology is likely to appeal to you if you enjoy analyzing the causes of crime and the motives of those who commit it, rather than focusing primarily on enforcement per se.
