Let's say you're fully employed as a nurse, you have an associate's degree and an RN license, earn a good salary and feel satisfied with your work. So why do you need to get another degree called an "RN to BSN?"

The fact is that many nurses decide that this a bachelors degree is a good investment. And working nurses often decide that taking the rn to bsn online is the best approach. The main key benefits they're seeking are usually A) a better chance to move into a management or supervisory position and B) a way to get into a more advanced, more specialized area of nursing practice.

Because a very large number of nurses want a bachelor's degree but can't afford to interrupt their careers, schools have been very creative in creating RN to BSN online programs that can be done on an accelerated basis, curstomized to a particular student's schedule, and which allow you get credit for courses you may have already taken, which can cut down on the time it takes to get your degree.

Different Skill Set
It you plan to stay in nursing, it's important to have an up to date skill set. For managerial jobs in hospitals and other medical facilities, that means being able to handle a variety of communications, business, legal and employee management jobs that require critical thinking. While it's important to have hands-on nursing experience if you are going to supervise a team of more junior nurses, all these non-clinical skills are key if you want to land a higher-paying senior position.

Even if you want to remain focused on clinical practice, however, the rn to bsn online can help you move your career forward. Because of treatment and technology advances, new specialties in nursing seem to emerge every year. A bachelors degree holder is often the best positioned nurse for a job in a testing facility, as a teacher in a college in some cases, or a nurse anesthetist, critical care nurse or other specialty practitioner.

Career Insurance
There are two other basic reasons the BSN can be a kind of insurance policy for your nursing career. The first is that nursing, obviously, is a physically strenuous job. Many nurses begin to find that aspect of the job harder and harder to deal with as they get into their late 40's, and start getting much more interested in more a "desk" type supervisory job. Second, if you want the freedom to move to another area at some point, the BSN can make your career more "portable." Particularly if you move to an urban area with lots of other nurses competing for jobs, your bachelor's degree makes it more likely that you'll always been one of the most desirable employees, even for a large hospital. It's estimated that in just a few years from now, over two-thirds of all nurses will hold bachelor's degrees. Getting an RN to BSN online while you work can help protect you against being "underqualified" whenever the time comes to look for a new nursing job.
