The Tech Degree That Can Move You Up Beyond the IT Department

Online technology management courses are for experienced IT professionals who want to add business knowledge to their skill set. Taking online degrees, computer science degree, software engineering or other basic studies will get your foot in the door of many corporate tech departments. But a technology management can give you the next step up into a more senior IT position, or a even a job where you plan major tech projects and handle budgets for a company. 

You'll need to choose a course of study based on your current skill set. If you've been working in the field for several years already, you may have a hard time finding a bachelor of computer science degree online that will teach you anything you don't already know. Keep in mind that the more advanced technology courses will focus more on business and at least a little less on pure technology.

One Step At A Time
Most young IT professionals start by taking some basic training (possibly getting an associates degree in technology) and then getting a starting job as a “computer doctor” handling the small problems that constantly crop up with web connectivity, e-mail, sometimes phone issues and even basic printer problems. Adding a bachelors degree or something more specialized like computer network security training in can move you into to a job programming or web development that will pay more, and probably be more fun to boot.

Most bachelor’s degrees in IT have provided database online training, computer security professional training and other basics. But the runaway growth of technology applications has forced schools to expand their technology management degree programs to include a much wider variety of courses in their bachelors degree offerings. This is where it gets complicated. At some schools, a BS in tech will be very focused on IT, while at other schools a BS in tech management may be more of an accounting course. Either way, the bachelor’s degree should be seen as a way to get you a supervisor’s level job in a tech department.

Moving Up To That Masters Degree
Most online masters degrees in technology education focus less on tech specifics and more on business skills like analytical skills, finance, project planning, operations management and even legal issues. You should pursue this kind of study if you are more interested in running a department - which usually involves managing people - than you are in the basic tech skills you get from an online computer science bachelor degree.

A master’s degree in technology is a tool to move you up into the business structure of a company. That means you’ll have an opportunity to make a good deal more money, but you’re likely to spend less time working on tech projects and a lot more time working with spreadsheets and attending meetings. If you have a strong interest in business management, it can be a great move, particularly if you’re able to get involved with one of the highly profitable software companies in the market.
