Online Learning Becomes Kids’ Stuff

Today’s distance learning news is all about kids. News item #1 is that a company called Teachscape has a new online learning approach designed to teach pre-kindergarten kids literacy skills. The company’s programs, developed with help from experts at the University of Texas, Houston, train teachers in online and face-to-face methods to build the “phonological skills necessary for school readiness” in little tikes. News Item #2 pertains to “tweens,” aged about 8 - 14. According to a study by the North American Council for Online Learning, they many be even more interested in online learning than in Hanna Montana. Only 7% of them have taken an online course, but more than 40% of elementary and middle school students say they are interested in taking one before they graduate from high school.
