Nurse anesthetists do pretty darned well

Nursing is, in many ways, a calling as much as a career. Most nurses will never come close to doctors or lawyers when it comes to earning potential. But the nurses who specialize in giving anesthesia during surgery, called “nurse anesthetists,” occupy a higher place on the earnings scale than most in the profession. According to a new article on money.cnn.com, these practitioners have median salaries of about $156,000., and the highest paid NA’s make over $200,000. It’s a specialty that requires more training than most other types of nursing and it’s not allowed in all states, but money.cnn calls it one of the “20 Highest-Paying Jobs” in America. Online Degree Earner Wins Vanderbilt University Nursing Award

This comes from a press release that’s, not surprisingly, very favorable to the school issuing it. But it’s interesting nonetheless to read about a nursing student from Embanet, the online affiliate of well-known Vanderbilt University, winnning the prestigious “Founders Medal” from the VU’s school of nursing. The medal winner, Ms. Zielinski-Carter, says that the asyncronous learning available to her online was a “blessing” that made it possible for her to earn a degree in Health Systems Management. Some Great Quotes on The Art of Nursing

I just put a new page of quotes about nursing on my online degrees site. I made a point of digging up some quotes from regular nurses; not just the usual quotes by Florence Nightengale and other famous people. Some favorites:

“Our job as nurses is to cushion the sorrow and celebrate the joy, everyday, while we are ‘just doing our jobs.’”
- Christine Belle, RN, BSN

“When I first started working in longterm care, after I’d been in a hospital setting, I bet I went home crying every night for 6 weeks because I said this just isn’t what I like. But the more I stayed, the more I understood it’s a different kind of nursing…We’re all going to die—that’s a part of life. Just when and how, we don’t know.”
- MarDee Dahlin, RN, quoted in “Caring For The Ages”

“The RN’s role is huge. We advocate for and mediate between patients and physicians. We also get social services involved to work with insurance companies and we give the patient the care that they deserve.”
- Lisa McDew, registered nurse in the orthopedic medical-surgical unit at Woodwinds Hospital, Woodbury, MN
