The Shy Learner: An Advantage Online
If you’re not the kind of person who likes to raise your hand
and "grab the spotlight" in a traditional classroom (particularly a
large one), you’ll find anonymity to be one of the real
advantages of online classes
Let’s say you’re not great at thinking on your feet.
In an online class, you’ll have the opportunity to think
carefully about you question or comment, and submit it to the professor
via email (you also have the opportunity to get a discussion
started on an idea virtually any time). In an online class, the
interaction between students and teachers doesn’t stop when the
“classroom” or “synchronous” session is over.
Some education professionals actually say that the ability of
students to “strike up a conversation” with the professor
by e-mail whenever an idea strikes them is one of the top advantages of
online training. Professors in some schools have said they actually get
to know students better in an online class than a traditional course
because of this “lower pressure” environment for
communication.
Shy learners who aren’t likely to raise their hands in a big
lecture hall full of students will find that the ability to respond in
their own time is one of the top advantages of online classes.
